How BIM360 Helps Construction Industry to Work From

Autodesk BIM360 and internet connectivity made it easier for construction companies to work from home without a hitch. BIM is a cloud-based design collaboration and data management solution that lets you stay connected at work, no matter where you are.

First things first, make sure you’re able to meet the following requirements so you could work remotely:

  • Internet connection = minimum is 5 Mbps, but for better performance, you should have up to 25 Mbps.
  • Internet browser = recommended is the latest version of Google Chrome. It can also work on Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Internet Explorer.
  • Supported devices = iPhone 5s+, iPad 2+, iPad Pro, and Android.
  • Supported operating systems = MS Windows and .Net versions for desktop, while iOS 12+ and 5.0 (Lollipop) for mobile.
  • Disk space = varies per software.
  • System hardware that can support later versions of Revit and Civil 3D.
  • Software/Application = purchase and install Revit, Civil 3D, and BIM 360.

Now that we got that covered, here’s how BIM is helping the construction industry, even when working from home:

BIM360 is also designed for home users

BIM 360 has four modules that allow users to work from home or outside the office, namely, Account Admin, Project Admin, Design Collaboration, and Document Management. Normally, any Autodesk subscriptions give the user Global Travel Rights to use products and services anywhere on the globe, and Home Use Rights which permits the user to access it from home or in the field.

It all starts when you set up your account profile at the administration level. BIM 360 has two admin levels, which also part of its core modules:

  • Account Admin = can activate accounts, control account settings, create projects, invite project administrators, and add third-party app integrations.
  • Project Admin = can edit project details, add and manage project members, and activate and edit project services.

Document Management and Design Collaboration

Besides Account Admin and Project Admin, Document Management and Design Collaboration modules also aid users to work with BIM anywhere. Document Management is a single project repository where you can access plans and projects in one place. It permits uploading, publishing, comparing, and reviewing of 2D plans and 3D BIM models in the cloud.

On the other hand, Design Collaboration allows you to work remotely with everyone in the team in real-time wherever they are. Here, you can view your team’s project timeline to monitor the project’s progress. Compare current and previous versions to check how it changed over time.

Moreover, Document Management and Design Collaboration modules allow you and your team to have seamless access to Revit and Civil files. In this way, everything is in a centralized location.

This authorises everyone in the team to co-author a Revit model in real-time from anywhere. First, you need access to Revit Cloud Worksharing, which you can do in two ways, either by user or product. It requires that you have a subscription to Revit and BIM 360; a BIM 360 Docs account and invitation; and permission to edit a BIM 360 Docs folder.

You can collaborate Civil 3D data shortcut projects with your team in BIM 360. After giving a user access to Autodesk Collaboration for Civil 3D, project teams can securely access and share Civil 3D files, data shortcuts, and xrefs from multiple locations. To enable this feature, you must have a Desktop Connector-enabled connected drive.

Mobile Apps

Sometimes it is a hassle to bring your laptop anywhere you go even though it is considered a portable device. As an alternative, you can opt for BIM 360 mobile app which is available on Android and iOS. However, it only allows you to access Document Management, Field Management, and Project Management modules.

Desktop Connector for BIM 360

It doesn’t only connect Civil projects to BIM 360, and vice versa. Likewise, it lets you synchronise your local files saved from your desktop and Document Management module for easy file administration. It is only available for Windows.

Once you download and install Desktop Connector for BIM 360, you can locate the BIM 360 data source icon  in your Windows Explorer. Take note that there might be a delay before changes are reflected in your connected drive.

Working with your team wherever they are is now possible with BIM 360 and its remote capabilities. You can review 3D BIM plans on your phone or create new projects on your laptop. BIM 360 allows you to view and compare the latest Revit and Civil 3D plans as long as you back up your files on a regular basis. In the comfort of your home, you can finish construction projects without sacrificing its quality, schedule, and budget.
